Mike Callaghan had been a part of our community as a father, a husband, a friend, a coach and a mentor. Mike had been involved with GEYA for well over ten years. More recently, in 2010, Mike helped coach the only 12U Little League team from GEYA that won the District 28 Title, the Section 7 Title and competed in the State Little League Championship.
Mike had a natural instinct of looking at a player and would see his true potential and talent… evident or a “diamond in the rough.” He could see through the layers to the true ability of a player and would work with him to help develop him into a “better” player and develop that talent – be it tweaking a batting stance, tracking a ball, teaching a new pitch, etc. However, in many cases, this happened by instructing the individual to dig deep inside themselves, teaching them to be confident and to never give up. With hard work, good things will come.
When Mike coached, in addition to helping develop the players’ skills, he also impressed upon them the meaning of good sportsmanship. His mantra: “Win with Respect. Lose with Dignity. And always be a gentleman.”
Many of us that have had the privilege to know Mike, both on and off the field, know that he was one of the “good guys.” He was truly in it for the kids and the love of the game. His passion was infectious to all!
